Is the glass ceiling a myth or are we too afraid to admit it's real?

For years, the concept of the glass ceiling has sparked debates across various industries. Is it just a myth, or is there an unspoken barrier that women face as they climb the corporate ladder?

As someone who believed that hard work and ambition were the only keys to success, I faced unexpected resistance when nearing top management and observed it for decades with fellow women in Tech. This experience opened my eyes to the harsh realities that many women encounter in the tech industry.

Initial Belief and Harsh Realization

Initially, my journey was fueled by the belief that dedication and focus would naturally lead to career advancement. I was determined, optimistic, and eager to make my mark. However, as I approached top management positions, I encountered an invisible wall. This resistance wasn't just from the male-dominated upper echelons but, surprisingly, also from other women leaders. The realization that the glass ceiling is a complex and real barrier was both disheartening and enlightening.

The Statistics Speak Volumes

The numbers paint a stark picture. 15% of Tech CEO are women (source Zippia 2022) Yet, companies with more women in leadership positions enjoy 15% higher profitability. These statistics highlight not just the presence of the glass ceiling but also the immense potential that lies in breaking through it.

Positive Developments and Initiatives

Despite the challenges, there's a silver lining. The environment for emerging female leaders is evolving, bringing powerful and positive changes. Companies are increasingly focusing on diversity and inclusion programs, establishing mentorship and sponsorship opportunities, and implementing policy changes like flexible working hours, parental leave, and return-to-work programs. These initiatives are creating a more supportive and conducive environment for women to thrive in their careers.

Strategies to Tackle the Glass Ceiling

To proactively address the glass ceiling, here are some steps that can be taken:

  1. Acknowledge Its Existence: Recognizing the glass ceiling is the first step towards tackling it.

  2. Understand Systemic Issues: It's not just about personal effort but also about addressing systemic barriers.

  3. Seek Allies and Mentors: Building a network of supportive allies and mentors can provide necessary guidance and support.

  4. Advocate for Yourself: Promote your achievements and ensure your contributions are recognized.

  5. Push for Organizational Change: Advocate for policies and practices that promote gender diversity in leadership.

Personal Reflection and Growth

  • It's easy to blame external factors for our career challenges, but true growth comes from introspection.

  • Have you considered the role the glass ceiling plays in your journey?

  • How did it make you feel?

  • How can you use the experiences and strategies of other women to inspire your own path?

  • Do you believe in your worth and the value you bring?

Addressing these questions can help in overcoming fears and misconceptions about your abilities.
